The EU Regulation 2023/1115 on Deforestation-free products will entry into force as soon as December 2024. It will drastically change the import procedure for a number of commodities -soy, beef, palm oil, wood, cocoa, coffee, rubber- and their derived products, such as chocolate.
This Regulation will impose due diligence obligations on traders to demonstrate that the product imported in the EU market is “deforestation-free” and ‘legal’; in turn the importer will need to collect such evidence from their suppliers in third countries. The required information includes, for example, the geolocation (latitude and longitude coordinates) of each and every plot of land where the commodities were produced.
