The new EU Organic Regulation, which entered into force in 2022, involves a complete overhaul of the trade regime for organics. The full list of third countries as well as control authorities & control bodies recognised by the EU for the purpose of equivalence will expire in 2024 and 2026 respectively. A brand-new trade regime, on the basis of ‘compliance’, will apply as of then.
This major shake-up of the trade system will bring changes for EU importers & their suppliers in third countries. It will also impact EU processing companies who incorporate imported commodities as ingredients; if imports of organic ingredients are discontinued or reduced, they might be forced to pull back operations.
As deadlines get closer, which are the challenges? What can be done to ensure a smooth transition?
